Card issuance and QC

Barnes certification test modules

Scheme certification test modules. The same detailed tests each scheme uses in qualification, so cards and mobile devices can be checked before submission.

Vendor: Barnes Specifications scheme certification Issuance and QC equipment Certification role

The testing problems this solves

The Barnes certification test modules let you run tests equivalent in detail to those each scheme uses in its qualification testing, in house and before submission. Checking beforehand reduces the risk of being sent back after submitting for certification.

Test case coverage

Pre-certification testing before submission to the scheme.

Supported terminals and environments

Intended for pre-certification testing before submission to the scheme. The schemes and module configurations supported are confirmed at quotation.

Main modules

Main modules
Visa GPR PVT (v4.3) Verifies VIS, VCPS, VMCPS and VMPA. Covers all regions except Europe; white plastic cards are submitted to the Visa laboratory. With the self-certification module, once a pass is achieved the process completes by submitting the CCRT report, without shipping physical cards
Visa Global Self-Service PVTVisa Global PVT qualification for the US, AP, MEA, CAN and LAC regions. Runs on the newer CPT v4 platform and produces machine-readable reports
Visa Europe Self-Service PVTVisa Europe qualification, on a CPT 3000v3 with a 3K7 reader. The CCRT report is submitted to Visa
Mastercard CPV PVT2.0Approved by Mastercard Worldwide. Supports Mastercard Profile Advisor v1.3.17 and later and Rule Set v320 and later. Verifies every form, from Cirrus, Maestro, MAS4C, PayPass and M/Chip Advance through to dual interface and mobile. Runs on CPT v4
Discover D-PAS / D-PAS ConnectApproved by Discover. Verifies contact, dual interface and US Debit. The D-PAS Connect module supports DPAS Connect 2.x under the December 2025 rules and runs on CPT v4
JCBVerifies J/Smart 2 for contact, J/Smart 3 for dual interface, and the JCB mobile application

Schemes supported

Afrigo, American Express, ATH, BancNet, BKM Troy, CPA, CPACE, Credibanco, CUP and F-CUP, Discover D-PAS CPV, EBC, eftpos (CPC), EMVCo L3 QT, GIE CB, GIMAC, Interac, Jaywan, JCB J/Smart and HCE/HPA, mada, Mastercard CPV PVT2, MCCS, NCCC, NETS including Wise RSA, NSICCS, PayPak, PBOC, Pure, RuPay PVT, Troy BKM, Twin, Taka Pay, Verve, Visa GPR PVT and EU/Global Self-Certification, among others. The test scripts are kept up to date with each scheme's latest specifications and are available for download from the Barnes site.

The current modules and versions are confirmed at quotation. For example, CPT v4 version 4.3.1 of May 2026 added a new D-PAS Connect 2.x module and updated Visa Global Self-Service, Mastercard PVT and JCB PVT.

Where this sits in certification

The modules approved by each scheme use tests equivalent in detail to those the scheme applies in its own qualification. Pre-certification testing, self-certification and formal laboratory certification are not, however, the same thing.

Where this sits in certification
CategoryDetail
Pre-certification testingReduces the risk of failure before submission. It is not certification itself
Self-certificationAfter a pass, a report such as the CCRT is submitted and, within certain limits, accepted as evidence in place of physical cards
Formal laboratory certificationDepending on the scheme and the region, submitting physical cards or testing at an accredited laboratory may still be required

Visa Global and Visa Europe are separate modules. What applies depends on the scheme, the region and the card type, so please confirm the submission requirements in advance.

Test configuration and data flow

StageElement
1Card or mobile device

7Pass or fail, the engineering log, and the report for certification submission

Script processing tests that involve cryptography require Host Simulation or an HSM.

Choosing between the CPT and CAT series

CPT checks whether a card matches a defined specification; CAT lets you develop the checking logic itself. The certification modules are additional software that runs on CPT or CAT, not standalone products.

Platform generations (v3 and v4)

Please confirm this at procurement. According to Barnes support information, the current core version of CPT 3000v3 and CAT 3000v3 is 3.71.0 (31 March 2026), and for CPT v4 it is 4.3.1.239 (15 May 2026). The v3 line continues to receive current versions for the Visa Europe Self-Service and other scheme certification modules and for quality control. The Mastercard, Visa Global Self-Service, JCB and Discover certification modules, however, are provided on CPT v4. Supported modules, library versions and certification schemes are re-confirmed at the time of deployment.

Platform generations (v3 and v4)
SituationWhat we recommend
You are continuing to inspect existing cards on an installed CPT 3000v3Continuing maintenance on v3 may be possible
New deploymentIn principle CPT v4 should be considered first
You use an older module for a particular schemeWe check v3 compatibility case by case
The latest Visa or Mastercard self-certificationThis configuration is likely to require v4
You have existing custom CAT scriptsWe check whether migration to v4 is possible, Tcl compatibility, and conversion cost
You own a reader dedicated to v3CL or v3MLWe check whether it can be reused with v4

Buying the base unit does not by itself enable certification for every scheme. The base unit, the CL and ML functions, the scheme modules, Host Simulation, the HSM connection, the reader, and maintenance and script updates may each be a separate licence or option. For new proposals we recommend v4 as the base platform, with the required modules configured individually.

Example configurations

Which elements you need depends on the use case. At quotation we always confirm the interface scope of the reader and the licences.

Example configurations
UseComponents
Standard configuration for EMV cardsCPT v4 or CPT 3000v3, a Barnes 3K7 Triple Interface Reader, the PVT scripts for the schemes concerned, the certification module for those schemes, and annual maintenance with script updates
Configuration including cryptographic verificationThe above plus the Host Simulation Module and issuer keys, or the HSM Interface and the HSM concerned
Developing your own card applicationCAT 3000v3CL or its successor, Tcl Script Development, contact and contactless readers, and Host Simulation or an HSM if required
Mobile and UICCThe ML configuration of CPT or CAT, an SWP reader, an NFC reader, real handsets, and the mobile scheme scripts concerned
Tachograph cardThe G2V2 Tachograph Card Test Tool, an ISO/IEC 7816 reader, the G1, G2V1 and G2V2 test suites, the licence for the card types concerned, test certificates and key sets, and an HSM if required
The role of each product in the Barnes family, and how to choose, is set out in Barnes International product guide.

Where it is used

  • Setting up card issuance and QC verification for a new development
  • Regression after a configuration change or update
  • Coverage checks ahead of certification

Relationship to certification

Pre-certification testing uses modules of the same class the scheme applies in its own qualification testing. Whether formal certification is passed is decided by the scheme.
