Card issuance and QC

SPY 3000

A smart card communication monitor. It taps the ISO/IEC 7816 communication between a contact chip card and accepting equipment such as an ATM, a POS terminal or a phone, over ISO/IEC 7816 without interfering, to debug EMV, GSM and 3G interoperability problems during development and in the field.

SPY 3000 A tap placed between card and terminal observes the contact communication without interfering

The testing problems this solves

SPY 3000 addresses the communication between a contact chip card (ISO/IEC 7816) and the accepting equipment. It taps that communication without interrupting the transaction, so interoperability problems can be analysed during development and in the field. Systematic testing removes the gaps, reliance on individuals and lack of reproducibility that tend to appear at this stage.

Test case coverage

Monitors ISO/IEC 7816 communication between the card and the accepting equipment, without intruding.

Test case coverage

Supported terminals and environments

Placed between the card and an ATM, POS terminal or mobile device. The equipment and connector requirements are confirmed at quotation.

Example test configuration and licences

These specifications come from the manufacturer's published datasheet, version 8.04. Current SKUs and supported operating systems are confirmed at quotation.

Operating systemsWindows XP, Vista and Windows 7, as stated in the datasheet
ScriptingTcl, with EMV and GSM/3G scripts supplied as standard

This is Barnes International's contact smart card communication monitor. It does not analyse contactless communication. Despite the similar name, ProxiSPY Quest from KEOLABS is a different, contactless product.

Three linked views

The exchange between card and terminal is shown in three views in real time. Selecting a command in one view moves the others to the same point.

Three linked views
Logic AnalyserDisplays the logic levels of Vcc, reset, clock and I/O graphically. The I/O source, card or terminal, is colour-coded, and two cursors measure the interval to one clock cycle
Byte Level Communication LogA byte-level communication log. The data source is colour-coded, and protocol bytes, data errors, parity errors and character repeat requests are highlighted
Interpreted Application TreeApplication-layer data in a tree view, controlled by Tcl scripts. Interpretation scripts for EMV and GSM/3G are supplied as standard, and scripts for other applications can be written in Tcl or commissioned from Barnes

Where it is used

  • Setting up card issuance and QC verification for a new development
  • Regression after a configuration change or update
  • Coverage checks ahead of certification

Relationship to certification

What this product performs is conformance testing. Formal type approval is carried out by an accredited test laboratory, and the Letter of Approval is issued by EMVCo or the payment system. What we supply is the test environment and support in operating it.
